Buffalo, NY

昨日無事にニューヨーク州にあるバッファローに着きました。バッファローはニューヨークシティから飛行機で1時間半ほどの場所にあります。ナイアガラの滝で有名な場所です。

私がこのバッファローに来た理由は元メータオ・クリニックでメディカルスタッフとして働いていた私の友人のセイリアに会うためです（詳しく彼女のことを知りたい方、「タイ・ビルマ国境難民診療所、女医シンシア・マウンの物語」をご購読ください！特に第５章は要チェック！）

彼女の存在は私が難民問題にかかわる大きな原動です。

彼女はビルマ・カレン族の難民としてタイ・ビルマ国境の難民キャンプから第三国定住として米国へ来ました。第三国定住とは難民キャンプなどで生活する難民を別の国が受け入れる制度のことです。日本は昨年度からビルマ・カレン族難民を対象に第三国定住を始めました。

彼女は3年ほど前に米国に移り住み、旦那さんと一緒に暮らしています。昼間は短大に行き夜はレストランでアルバイトをしています。旦那さんは先に短大を卒業し日中は帽子を作る工場で働いています。

素敵な家、車を買い米国で普通に暮らす彼らに正直驚きました。難民キャンプでは竹の家に住み雑魚寝で家族とともに過ごしていた彼らが洋風の家に住みベッドで眠る。

「メータオ・クリニックでは貧しい生活しかできなかった。タイ警察を恐れ許可書なしには外出することはできなかったけれどここには自由がある。」

そういった彼女には以前よりも自信が満ち溢れているような気がしました。

明日はセイリア夫婦とナイアガラの滝に行く予定です。晴れますように！

  I arrived at Buffalo, NY in safety yesterday. It took for one and a half hours to Buffalo from Manhattan, NY. Buffalo is well known about the Niagara Falls. The main reason why I came to Buffalo is to meet my friend, Ceilia who used to work at the Mae Tao Clinic with me as a medical staff.  Her existence triggered me to think about refugee issue.
  As a Karen refugee, she resettled in US from the refugee camp, located on the Thai-Burma border. The Resettlement involves the assisted movement of refugees who are unable to return home, to safe the third countries such as US, Canada and UK. Japan government has started to accept Karen refugees since last year.
  She came to US three years ago and lives with her husband. During the daytime, she has studied at the community college and has worked at  restaurant as a part time job. Her husband graduated from the community college and works at the factory produces the hat.
  They purchased a nice house and car in same way American people do. I was surprised how different her life was. When they lived in the refugee camp, they stayed at the bamboo house and slept on the floor with their family but now they're living in the Western house and lie down on the bed.
  "I was poor at the Mae Tao Clinic. I was always afraid of Thai police and without any documents, I could not go to outside, but here is freedom in US" Ceilia said. I found that she is more confident in herself than before.
  I'll go to the Niagara Falls with Ceilia and her husband tomorrow. I hope the weather clears up!
